Upcoming Liaison Meeting on trade marks, designs and cooperation


The EUIPO will be holding its virtual Liaison meetings sessions on 14, 15 and 18 October. The sessions will be comprised of one on Trade Marks, one on Designs (14/10) and two sessions on Cooperation on 15 and 18 October.

The Liaison Meetings contribute significantly towards the continuous development and sustainability of the European Union Intellectual Property Network (EUIPN). Cooperation and collaboration are key to supporting user development within the EU’s IP system. The Liaison Meetings are the official fora in which experts from EU National offices, candidate countries and members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), as well as representatives from the European Commission and user associations, gather to discuss the latest developments in the world of trade marks and designs. They also exchange technical expertise in line with Article 152 of the EU trade mark regulation (EUTMR).

Various EUIPO services and departments, as well as the EU Commission and Member State IP Offices, will be involved in presenting the agenda items. The discussions will cover topics such as:

  • Updates on convergence projects, part of the European Cooperation Projects – ECP4: Convergence of Practices:
  • CP13 ‘Trade mark applications made in bad faith’
  • CP14 ‘Trade marks contrary to public policy or to accepted principles of morality’
  • Maintenance of Common Practices
  • Convergence Analysis 2.0.
  • Overview of recent decisions from the European Courts and the Boards of Appeal
  • The EUIPO and Member State office practices on geographical indications (GIs)
  • Overview of the consultation cycle for the guidelines on trade marks.
  • Consultation cycle for the guidelines on design practice
  • Situation regarding the review of EU legislation on Design protection (speaker from the EU Commission)
  • Outcomes of the working group meetings
  • Update on the initiatives in support of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • The Action Plan developed by the Boards of Appeal’s

Participants will also be provided with information on the EUIPO Digital Transformational Programmes, which will include an overview of the ‘Robust Digital Backbone Programme’, the ‘Digital Evolution Programme’, latest developments within the programmes, and results from project related to artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain and data literacy.

Finally, there will be a session with updates on international cooperation in non-EU countries (including the TM5 and ID5 projects), activities with the European Patent Office (EPO), the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), and on ‘EU-funded projects’.
