Protecting IP in third countries

In a globalised market, intellectual property rights (IPR) protection should not stop at the borders of the European Union (EU). Consequently, the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights is increasingly involved in supporting activities aimed at improving IPR protection, not just within the EU, but also in third countries.

In close collaboration with the EU Commission and in the framework of the EUIPO’s own international cooperation actions, the Observatory is expanding its networking activities in countries outside of the EU.

The EUIPO is the implementing agency for a number of EU-funded projects in third countries such as IPKey and ARISE Plus. In this regard the Observatory supports EUIPO’s international cooperation activities by providing technical support, training, knowledge sharing as well as the creation of enforcement related networks in third countries.

The Observatory is also collaborating with a number of EU Commission IP initiatives in third countries such as the ‘IP Markets Watch-List’ and the ‘Report on the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in third countries’. In addition, the Observatory is actively involved in supporting the EU Delegation IP Network, which consists of EU delegates dealing with IP matters in third countries.

All international activities of the Observatory are driven by the aim of contributing to an improved IPR protection on a global scale and supporting European right holders doing business in third countries. European rights holders interested in protecting their IPR outside the EU can obtain further information and support from the relevant regional IPR SME Helpdesk, which is a project co-funded by the European Union.
