SME Fund, IP in Africa, DesignEuropa: the Executive Director update
Ideas Powered for Business
In his latest video update the EUIPO’s Executive Director, Christian Archambeau, talks about the “Ideas Powered for business” SME Fund, which supports smaller businesses with IP advice and helps them register trade mark and designs at the national or EU level. The SME Fund is a €20 million scheme created specifically to help European small to medium-sized enterprises access their intellectual property rights.
So far, in 2021, the EUIPO has supported more than 8 000 SMEs from all over the EU. The SME Fund’s fifth application window is open until end of September while the sixth application window will be launched on 1 and open until 31 October 2020.
IP in the EU and beyond
For Mr Archambeau, IP offices have a clear role in actively encouraging innovation and helping bring ideas to market. He also commented on the fast growth in demand for IP titles from China as well as the growing interest from Africa. The Africa Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project (AfrIPI), which the EUIPO administers, was recently officially launched at a diplomatic conference in Kampala, Uganda.
Next big events
Conferences, meetings and other events are increasingly moving back to normal. The Executive Director welcomes the fact that the plenary meeting of the European Observatory on IP infringements, to be held in Alicante at the end of September, and the DesignEuropa Awards in Eindhoven in the Netherlands taking place on 19 October, are being organised, primarily, as presential events.
