Better search results for our number one application
We have improved eSearch plus to give you more accurate results when you search for figurative trade marks using an image. The beta phase of our image search feature is now over but more improvements are coming up.
eSearch plus now features an improved algorithm based on deep learning technology that combines visual similarity and object recognition to improve the ranking of search results using Vienna codes.
eSearch plus is the Office’s most popular application, accounting for nearly 60 % of all EUIPO website traffic. It allows you to search for trade marks, designs, owners, representatives and the Bulletin, all in a single application. In November 2015, we introduced a new image recognition feature in beta to search for images with a quick and simple ‘drag-and-drop’ function. Today, on average, more than 16 000 searches are carried out per month using this image recognition technology, which accounts for 42 % of all figurative trade mark searches.
After nearly a year of successful implementation, we are closing the beta phase with a tool upgrade. eSearch plus now features an improved algorithm based on deep learning technology that combines visual similarity and object recognition to improve the ranking of search results using Vienna codes.
Why use image recognition when searching for trade marks?
Image recognition gives certain advantages over just using Vienna codes.
When you search with Vienna codes alone, your search results could be too broad if your mark has features that are too common. On the other hand, if the features are too specific, you could end up with the wrong Vienna code(s). However, if you use the eSearch plus image recognition feature, you can compare similarity across the entire registry of figurative trade marks and obtain more accurate results.
