EUIPO connects to TMview and DesignView through blockchain

The EUIPO has launched the first ever European blockchain platform to better serve public IP institutions and their clients. TMview and DesignView, the EUIPO’s two flagship search services, now use blockchain to bring super-fast, reliable, and secure delivery of IP rights information. Watch the video to understand this exciting and transformative event.

The ‘genesis block’ of the blockchain was created at 08.10 CET on 17 April 2021. At that precise moment, the EUIPO connected to TMview and DesignView via the blockchain to deliver trade mark and design data in real time. These search tools gather more than 62 million trade marks and 17 million designs from across the EU and beyond.

Why is Blockchain important for IP?
Blockchain improves speed while maintaining high quality data transfers. Data integrity and security is taken to another level, thus opening the door to new services that will improve connectivity between users and their IP rights, and which will speed up inter-IP Office procedures.

The IP Register in Blockchain
The IP Register in Blockchain is one of the projects of the Digital Evolution programme, which embraces new technologies to shape and improve the services provided by the EUIPO. New technologies such as cloud, blockchain, big data and artificial intelligence will be key instruments making the Office a point of reference for technology in the intellectual property sector.

Offices from the EU will be joining throughout this year, and international interest is growing as IP offices seek to make the most of the IP Register on Blockchain.

The EUIPO has been analysing and developing blockchain technology for several years now. In doing so, the Office aims to unleash the potential of this new technology in the domain of intellectual property (IP).  The EUIPO will soon launch a decentralised, blockchain authentication platform that can help solve the global phenomenon of fakes - watch this space for more exciting news on Blockchain and IP.
