Tackling it will require a global, multifaceted and multidisciplinary approach. The generalised use of the Internet now makes the situation even more pressing. Counterfeiting leads to job losses, a loss of income, and it also stymies productivity. This affects both the public and private sectors. Furthermore, it poses a serious risk to consumer health and safety and is damaging the environment. Moreover, this year we are suffering the social and economic consequences of the global health crisis caused by COVID-19. Our businesses are forced to limit their capacity, or in some cases even to close, in order to prevent a worsening of the health crisis. We, as citizens and consumers, can help to mitigate the damage posed by counterfeiting by being more conscious of what we are purchasing. In so doing, collectively, we can help create a more prosperous future. It goes without saying that in order to meet these challenges we must do our part and purchase only original products. From the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM), we would like to raise awareness as to the importance of buying original products, so as to help local businesses. Buying original products is not only in the interest of the rightsholders, but also for society as a whole. This is because these products come with a set of guarantees in terms of consumer safety....Mindre

The lockdown measures to contain COVID-19 have boosted demand even further, with leading streaming services even agreeing to reduce the video quality of streams at the request of the EU Commission to free up bandwidth for more important services. Even though the first rush of new customers to the streaming platforms has already slowed down somewhat, the increased demand in the area of video streaming has also led to an increased number of consumers who have fallen for fraudulent offers. Many consumers do not notice if they have signed up for a dubious streaming service. The rude awakening often comes a few days later when letters arrive from lawyers or debt collection agencies demanding several hundred euros for allegedly completed annual memberships. Due to the numerous requests for help from injured parties, the European Consumer Centre Austria (ECC) has now compiled information for consumers on the subject of video streaming....Mindre
