Copyright piracy has progressively become a very lucrative criminal activity. Investigations highlighted the main business models used for profit making purposes as well as the different ways in which criminals offer copyright infringing material over the Internet. As a result, a significant stream of new case law in Europe developed in Europe, dealing with interesting elements of the online infringing models as well as with the relationship between online piracy and other associated crimes, as money laundering.

The webinar will present the main characteristics of online copyright piracy registered in some leading cases across the European Union: Bajatetodo in Spain, BitTorrents.ro in Romania and Swefilmer in Sweden. The different business models will be highlighted as well as the different types of content sharing methods used by criminals and their relation to National and EU jurisprudence.

Particular emphasis will be placed at the end of the webinar on money laundering practices used in the BitTorrents.ro and Swefilmer cases, which are connected to recent EU jurisprudence and legislation on self-laundering and its relationship with the ne bis in idem principle.
