The EUIPO Academy

Since its creation back in 2011, the Academy has grown and is now seen as one of the reference centres as far as intellectual Property (IP) knowledge and dissemination is concerned. It has moved from being the traditional training-delivery centre to being a Learning and Knowledge transfer vehicle serving EUIPO staff, National IP Offices, academic community and public in general.

The launch of the EUIPO Academy Learning Portal in 2013, together with the increase of eLearning modules, has helped to penetrate new territories.

Our vision

In the global knowledge-based economy, the importance of IP and innovation as a driver of competitive advantage and prosperity has increased. Therefore, the Academy has an important role to play as a tool for increasing awareness of IP among all stakeholders and also to make the IP system in Europe more accessible through knowledge dissemination. In addition to this, Academy promotes career-long development for the Office staff.

Our tools

The EUIPO Academy uses a blended course format for an integrated approach to learning. It combines face-to-face classroom techniques with videos and e-learning. Moreover, it carries out IP training events, conferences and other IP training activities.

The EUIPO Academy Learning Portal hosts a wide range of learning resources with features for online collaboration. Among them several courses about trademarks and designs can be found, from a basic introduction to specific issues like absolute grounds or enforcement. Besides, all webinars and streamed conferences from EUIPO can be accessed through the Learning Portal.

Pan-European Seal Professional Traineeship Programme

The EUIPO Academy is also in charge of the Pan-European Seal Traineeship Programme. It is a partnership of two of the world's largest IP offices, the EUIPO and the European Patent Office (EPO), together with their strategic University partners.

Through it, high-achieving young university graduates from the partner universities can access paid traineeships in EUIPO and the EPO. The experience will help the students get a foot in the door of the competitive world of IP through on-the-job multicultural work experience. Through the Learning Portal there is eLearning material on IP matters, free of charge, as a professional complement to partner Universities' IP training Syllabuses.

Joint Doctorate EIPIN-Innovation Society

The EUIPO Academy coordinates the involvement of the EUIPO in the EIPIN-Innovation Society PhD programme, a joint doctorate in intellectual property funded by the EU Commission, and run by five Universities that are the EIPIN’s academic partners (Magister Lvcentinvs (ML), University of Alicante; Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI), University of Strasbourg; Intellectual Property and Knowledge Management (IPKM), Maastricht University; Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC), University of Augsburg; Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute (QMIPRI), University of London).

As a partner organisation, the EUIPO provides speakers for conferences and seminars, grants access to our intellectual property data and to our online training catalogue, as well as supporting dissemination initiatives like the publication of thesis. In addition, researchers taking part in the joint doctorate programme can also take part in on-site research visits.
